Disc problems in small dogs are common. The back bone is made up of small segments called vertebrae. The middle to lower back is the area most affected by herniated discs. The vet has to examine the dog in order to tell if they have a herniated disc and where it is. A herniated disc will show as spinal material pushing against the spinal cord on an x-ray. A dog, or person, with a herniated disc will need surgery to remove the affected material that is pushing out. I know that cortisone is most often used with people who have a herniated disc. I’m not sure about animals.
