The vet has to examine the dog in order to tell if they have a herniated disc and where it is. A herniated disc will show as spinal material pushing against the spinal cord on an x-ray. A dog, or person, with a herniated disc will need surgery to remove the affected material that is pushing out. I know that cortisone is most often used with people who have a herniated disc. I’m not sure about animals.
